Deep convection in GALES
A simulation of the onset of deep convective clouds in an idealized simulations using GALES. On the ground, the accumulated precipitation is marked in blue.
Secondly, the same simulation is shown, this time not showing the accumulated precipitation field, but a cross section of the vertical velocity at ~200m. In the red areas, air is moving upward, whilst in the blue areas, it moves downward. Note the circular structures of downward moving air, surrounded with small bands of strongly upward moving air. These structures typically appear below deep convective clouds, and are associated with cold pools.
